Windsor praises irritated Verstappen: 'Great driver with a lot of self-confidence'
Max Verstappen was quite irritated during his first stint on Sunday during the Spanish Grand Prix. His team wanted to keep him out longer, but the Dutchman had realised for a while that it was not going to work. Peter Windsor praises Verstappen for his action.
During the first stint on the red tyre, it soon became clear that Verstappen could not keep up with his great rival Lewis Hamilton. The Brit had taken it easy at first, but once he started to accelerate, Verstappen could not come along. Red Bull Racing then wanted to stretch his first stint, but Max disagreed.
Verstappen lectures Red Bull
"Everyone was on the same tyre and strategy inside the top 10 and because of that Red Bull wanted to try something different. And maybe they would get more out of the Red Bull than Mercedes could with the extra power and their sets of soft tyres. However, the opposite happened and Verstappen indicated that his rear tyres were going to go long before Mercedes had problems. He then clearly said 'guys I know what I'm talking about, get me in,'"Windsor says in his new video.
The former Williams team manager praises Verstappen for this clear communication. "It was interesting to hear, because it just goes to show how much confidence he has in the car and the feel for how to race and the stategy. After that P2 and they review, they'll probably laugh about it at Red Bull, but it was an interesting moment that once again gives us a glimpse at how good a driver Max Verstappen is becoming," Windsor concludes.
