After the second Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, Renault announced that they were going to protest against the legality of the Racing Point. That car would resemble too much the Mercedes of 2019. To be precise, it would go around the brakes of the Racing Point which suspiciously resemble those of Mercedes. However, McLaren does not expect that the protest will yield much.

"Of course as a team we don't know all the details of the protest that has been filed", Andreas Seidl tells Racefans.net. "To be honest, when you see how outspoken and proud Racing Point is about their performance to drive a one year old Mercedes, I would be surprised if they have done something that is not allowed by the regulations".

Clarity is important

"Obviously it's nice that there's more clarity now, also for us as McLaren. I think that a protest is an alternative way to make things clear from the FIA and Formula 1 around the future of F1. Do they want Formula 1 to be a copycat championship, where you have two or three constructors who make everything, with the rest copying? That is clearly not the direction in which McLaren wants to go".

"Formula 1 is a championship between ten teams. The best car eventually takes the championship and that's what every team wants". Because Seidl doesn't know all the details about the protest, he doesn't want to say too much about it. "There is no point in saying anything about it, because that is just suggesting. We support Renault in their protest, as it mainly provides clarity", Seidl said.
