Alessandro Zanardi has been in hospital for some time now. This as a result of a serious accident with his handbike. The Italian has also had several operations and has been in an artificial coma for quite some time. It has been difficult to wake him up because of his neurological condition, but that moment has now arrived.

Reduction of anaesthesia

In a news update of the Siena University Hospital it says that Zanardi will be taken out of his artificial coma step by step in the coming days. "The health management, in agreement with the patient's family, informs that the progressive reduction of sedoanalgesia has started."

"Following the reduction of sedation, it will take a few days for further evaluations of the patient by the multidisciplinary team that is treating the athlete, to allow any continuation of his therapeutic and rehabilitative path." At the moment Zanardi is in a stable situation, but the neurological picture remains serious and the prognosis remains confidential.

Next week, the hospital will share a new update on Zanardi with his family.
