Mercedes drove the Austrian Grand Prix for the first time with the black livery. Many wondered if this did not have consequences for the cooling of the car. Mercedes was also able to use the DAS system for the first time.

''Beneath the black layer there is still a silver coating that is heat-resistant. This way the bike is protected against the heat and I can assure you that we do not suffer from the black livery. If you really wanted to, a light livery might help reduce heat before, but the difference will be very small," says James Vowles to Motorsport.it.

The DAS comes into action anyway

Despite the protest from Red Bull Racing, Mercedes was able to start the weekend with the DAS system. The FIA had approved it and so Mercedes' innovation could be used during qualifying and the race.

''It was a case of doubt, but in the end it worked. This is a great result for everyone who worked on it for months and it helped the drivers throughout the weekend. We will only see the potential of this system on different circuits and under different conditions, but for now we are very happy how it has worked," concludes Vowles.
