Fernando Alonso hasn't been in a Formula 1 car for almost two years now. Is Renault considering the 38 year old driver taking a seat in the RS20 during a first free practice session in the 2020 season? Cyril Abiteboul answers that question in conversation with Motorsport.com.

"I don't think we need to use Fernando during a VT1 to get him used to the procedures of an F1 car again", Renault's team boss is clear. "I don't think he needs it and it's not in our plans".

Renault doesn't have a plan yet with Alonso

Another option for the French factory team is to put Alonso in an older car. "We always have that option. Just to be clear, we don't have a plan yet. But I don't think that running Fernando in a first free practice is a necessary investment", said Abiteboul.

The next few weeks and maybe even months will be mainly about getting to know the team at the Enstone factory for the two-time world champion. "There he will meet everyone. For the team the arrival of Fernando means the opportunity to learn about performance and victories. Fernando will be able to convey that to the team".
