Helmut Marko believes that both Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon had a good chance of winning the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday. According to the 77-year old Austrian, Verstappen had an excellent stint and Albon's tyres in the final stages of the race on the Red Bull Ring were very much better than those of the competition.

"The speed was perfect. We went better on the mediums than we had thought before," says Marko in conversation with ORF. In front of the camera of the Austrian television station, the consultant calls the failures of Verstappen and Albon 'very disappointing'.

Albon would have had Hamilton easy

Red Bull Racing thought to have the best chance of victory with Verstappen, but after the Dutchman dropped out, Albon also suddenly got the chance to throw in a shot at victory on the Red Bull Ring. By making a good strategic move, the 24-year-old British Thai suddenly had the freshest tyres on the field. "Those soft tyres were as good as new. We saw how much extra speed Alex drove past Hamilton."

According to Marko, Albon could have taken his first career win on Sunday. "It would have been enough for the victory," said Marko, who then briefly mentioned the situation of Verstappen, who might have been even more promising with a different strategy. "Even with Max the situation was actually very favorable."

Red Bull closer on Sunday

Next week the next Grand Prix of 2020 is already planned. Formula 1 will drive again at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. "There is still a bit of a lack of speed in general, but we have the right direction to take. We now have five days. We are going to work hard to make sure this doesn't happen now. Once again we have seen that the proportions are different in the race. It hurts though," Marko concluded.
