Racing Point was considered a dangerous outsider prior to the 2020 season and that role seems to be fulfilling it during the first GP weekend. Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll did well and the RP20 seems to be particularly competitive. This is due to another course that was sailed last winter.

"It looks promising," says Szafnauer in conversation with Sky Sports. The team boss of the British race stable still sees plenty of room for improvement. "We can still make some changes to the set up, but for now everything looks good."

Perez finished the first free practice session in fifth place, while Stroll also had a long view of a thick top-ten ranking. At the end of the session, however, the Canadian dropped a bit. "It's a short lap here so if you make a mistake it counts", the born Romanian has some advice for his drivers.

Szafnauer also briefly goes into the many things that have been done during the winter months. "We are running on our programme as normal", he says. The chef also points out that they opted for a different concept in 2020. "We followed a Red Bull philosophy in the past and then switched to Mercedes." Even before the start of the year, Szafnauer spoke words to the same effect.
