For which new engines does Formula 1 choose? "We have to stay interesting.
- GPblog.com
From 2022 onwards, Formula 1 will make a big change with the new aerodynamic regulations designed by the Ross Brawn team. However, an even bigger job is planned for 2026: The new engine regulations.
New engines
Since 2014 the Formula 1 teams have been driving the V6 hybrid engines, where Mercedes in particular had a big lead over the rest. Meanwhile, the field has come closer together and the engines don't evade each other much anymore. From 2026, however, a new set of rules will have to be drawn up because the current agreement is due to expire.
''That's what all our attention is focused on right now. We have to think about what kind of bike we want and therefore especially which way you want to go as a sport. What purpose does the sport have in itself, what is the economic climate like and what lessons have we learned from the previous bikes'', says Brawn to Racefans.net.
Future of Formula 1
An important part of the future plans of Formula 1 is the sustainable project to become carbon neutral and for this purpose sustainable fuels are being looked at. ''That all has to be taken into account, but as a sport you also want to remain interesting for motorcycle suppliers and the bike has to remain affordable'', says Brawn, who still has a hell of a job ahead of him.
''It's a lot of challenges to determine the right engine, but it's the chance to take a step forward as a sport. The new rules of 2022 are also important in this respect and we must not forget that we will run into problems there as well. So we have to pay attention to that as well, in order to be able to adjust things if necessary,'' concludes Brawn.
