Formula 1 announced earlier that there is a plan for a new qualifying format during the second race in Austria and England: a reverse grid sprint race. However, not everyone liked this idea.

The plan was shelved, because a unanimous decision is needed from the teams if it were to be implemented within in the short term. Mercedes, which in recent years managed to conquer the most pole position thanks to current qualifying format, voted against as expected. Daniel Ricciardo can understand that.

Ricciardo supports Mercedes

''I'm not always that conservative, but in this case I think there are more important things in Formula 1 that are in need of a change. I understand that fans find this interesting to see how faster cars should fight their way forward, but there are also many situations where it doesn't work and then it gives a lot of crap. We don't need that," Ricciardo said in the live video on Instagram of Formula 1.

Where the competition and also the F1 leadership had hoped for an open minded Mercedes, their attitude is understandable. For years they have worked hard to build the fastest car and not the best car to overtake. The sport changes and can have consequences for their results. If you have an option to stop it, it's not surprising that Mercedes has done so.
