Normally two crown jewels of motorsport take place at the same time: the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indy 500. In 2021 this is not the case and that could be a big advantage of Fernando Alonso.

Triple Crown

It's no secret that Alonso is looking for a return to Formula 1, but he wants to win. The Spaniard has shown he can do that in F1, but you have to be in the right team. As far as that's concerned, other classes are sometimes more honest, which is why Alonso has focused on the Triple Crown.

With the win in the 24 Hours of Le Mans already in his pocket and a victory at the Monaco Grand Prix, Alonso has only one goal left: The Indy 500. However, this usually clashes with Formula 1 and if Alonso wants to take a chance every year, a return to Formula 1 is not ideal.

Unique chance for Alonso

However, in 2021 the Monaco Grand Prix will be held on the 23rd of May and the Indy 500 only one week later on the 30th of May. ''There's a chance he'll be driving Formula 1 in 2021 and then he can combine it with the Indy 500. With his experience in that class it's possible for him to change over in a week'', says Zak Brown in conversation with IndyStar.

''For any other Formula 1 driver such a switch would be quite difficult, because you wouldn't have experience on an oval. Alonso has and seen how fast he was the first time, you know he can participate'', concludes Brown, who will not put Alonso in the car himself in 2021, because with Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris his line-up is already known.
