'Deal between Renault and Alonso is almost done'

With the departure of Daniel Ricciardo from Renault at the end of this season, a seat will become available at the French race stable. Who will be his replacement is not yet known, but the rumour mill is running at full speed. One of the options that is mentioned is Fernando Alonso, who has already indicated several times not to rule out a return to Formula 1.

Return to Renault

Whether it will be Fernando Alonso, who won two world titles with Renault in the past, remains to be seen. However, the German site Bild writes with some certainty that the negotiations are already quite far. The website has heard from a reliable source that Alonso will be the replacement for Ricciardo and that the deal is almost done.

Bild doesn't have more details at the moment, but if this is true we will undoubtedly hear more soon.

Random?

It's striking that Flavio Briatore posted a message about Alonso on Instagram today. In this case it concerns a picture of the second place of Alonso in a Renault during the French Grand Prix. "Fernando came in second in the race, but made everyone at Renault proud and happy, as it was the team’s home grand prix", wrote Briatore.

However, that race took place on July 4, 2004 and although it was certainly a good moment, the choice seems a bit arbitrary. Unless Briatore deliberately tries to throw some oil on the fire about the current rumours.

Finally Martin Brundle of Sky Sports also gives his opinion, he says: "I think Alonso is desperate to get back into Formula 1, he'll be throwing his hat in the ring somewhere. Could it be a third trip to Renault for him?"
