Ferrari to America: 'Italians were well on their way to cooperate with IndyCar'

Ferrari as a brand is inextricably linked to Formula 1, but the illustrious Italian brand also has ears for other sports classes. According to Mario Andretti, the team should actually make the step to IndyCar.
Ferrari was already close to making the move to America in the 80s. Michele Alboreto was allowed to test a car on Fiorano and the team was in conversation with CART champion Bobby Rehal. The Italian brand wouldn't make the move in the end, but over thirty years later Mattia Binotto and Roger Penske would have been sitting around the table.
Ferrari to America
That suggests at least Mario Andretti in conversation with La Gazzetta dello Sport. ''It would be great to have Ferrari as an engine supplier, but also as a chassis builder. It is clear that the rules would have to change to get a fight between Dallara and Ferrari, but it is not impossible'", says the four-time IndyCar champion and also Formula 1 world champion.
With Honda and Chevrolet the IndyCar currently has two engine suppliers, but Motorsport.com is able to report that the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was well on its way to finally team up with the American championship. The idea would originally have been Sergio Marchionne's, but due to his death it came on a lower level. Alfa Romeo's marketing money was then outsourced to Formula 1. Whether the IndyCar plans are still in play is still a question for now.
