At the time of writing, Canada has just over four thousand inhabitants infected with the coronavirus. In the North American country 39 people have died because of the virus, but Jacques Villeneuve unfortunately expects that this will not be all. The former Formula 1 driver therefore doesn't know if the Grand Prix of Canada can take place in 2,5 months time.

"We are forced to stay at home so we follow the instructions", Villeneuve tells Le Journal de Montreal. The single world champion states that Canada is only at the beginning of its outbreak. "There are thousands of cases here and it is far from over. And what we are experiencing here now, we are going to experience elsewhere."

Situation Canada may deteriorate

Villeneuve sees that tens of thousands of cases have occurred in France and Spain and does not rule out that America will be the next big victim. “The next step, to a very large extent, could be America. I don’t want to alarm anyone, but the situation could get worse if this trend continues", he says in the Canadian newspaper.

That's why, according to the 48-year-old Formula 1 analyst, it is difficult to say right now whether the Canadian Grand Prix will be the first Grand Prix of the season and can take place on the date that the weekend is now scheduled. "The Grand Prix marks the start of summer in Montreal – it’s a great event that is eagerly awaited each year," the Canadian continues his story. "I can hardly believe that it will take place on June 14. But the good news is that the assembly of the circuit can be delayed. It’s not as complex as Baku or Monaco.”
