FIA set up “crisis cell” amid coronavirus issues
- Bevan Youl
The FIA has set up a crisis cell to “closely monitor” the developing coronavirus outbreak with threats to motor racing events to ensure action is taken to protect the global motor sport community.
The coronavirus outbreak has already impacted a number of motor racing events and the governing body has already been monitoring the situation but has now stepped up its efforts.
A committee will gather every other day to discuss matters in response to feedback from Professor Gerard Saillant, the president of FIA’s medical commission.
The statement read: “An FIA Crisis Cell has been established and convenes every second day to consider the latest developments around the world.
“The FIA continues to closely monitor the situation and its implications, together with its Member Clubs and Promoters, and follows the advice of relevant authorities including Governments and the World Health Organization.
“The FIA will evaluate the calendar of its forthcoming competitions and take any action required to help protect the global motor sport community and the wider public, including the postponement of competitions where necessary.”
F1’s Chinse Grand Prix has already been postponed while the first three races (Australia, Bahrain and Vietnam) are under threat.
While two rounds of Formula E, one in China and one in Italy, have been called off.
