Mercedes forced to change Hamilton's engine to investigate problem
Mercedes clearly has problems with the engine. After Valtteri Bottas had to come in to check the engine on Thursday morning, Lewis Hamilton stopped his Formula 1 car out on the track.
Mercedes changes the engine
The winter tests in Barcelona are there to explore the limits of your car and to test as much as possible. Mercedes has proven to be very good at that in recent seasons but appears to be vulnerable in 2020. The Mercedes engine already failed twice in the Williams and has now also shown problems in the factory team.
Because Hamilton only arrived one and a half hours later than planned, a new engine appeared to be in the car. Hamilton came to a halt after fourteen laps which came as a big surprise.
Hamilton back on track
During the night, from Thursday to Friday, Mercedes had to change the engine, because there seems to be a bigger problem. That engine must be examined in the factory before it can be raced again in Melbourne. A problem with the oil pressure caused the problem and that must be remedied.
Lewis appeared on the track again on Friday morning, but Mercedes did screw the old engine into the car. With that, the Brit has already 50 laps on the clock, but it does not go entirely according to plan at Mercedes.
