James Key admits McLaren have to take risks to reach potential
2019 was a season of resurgence for McLaren but James Key their technical director believes the team have to risk more to reach their potential, but they don't want to lose what they already have.
After a challenging few years, McLaren entered 2019 with a fresh slate, including a new driver line-up of Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris. The pair's results saw the team finish fourth in the Constructors' Championship and take the best of the rest accolade.
They'll be hoping to establish themselves as the midfield leaders, in 2020 whilst also closing the gap on the leading packs. James Key believes the Woking-based team must find the right balance between pushing for more and settling for what they have.
"There are still many possibilities with these rules if we look at the fastest three," Key said as quoted by Marca.
"The current car has strengths and weaknesses For example, the front has been a weakness from the beginning and we have tried to understand why and how to correct it, just as a good job has been done to know what features of the car avoid other problems.
"It is a balance, we try not to go too far because we have competitive material, but we also have to risk to find more potential."
