Horner expects Albon to "benefit" from a more relaxed winter break
Christian Horner expects Alexander Albon to benefit from a more standard winter break. The Aston Martin Red Bull Racing driver came in as a last minute signing for Toro Rosso ahead of the 2019 F1 season giving him hardly any time to adjust to a Formula 1 car.
The laps he drove in pre-season testing were his first in an F1 car. The British-Thai racer had no free practice or test sessions to become acostumed to the speed and power of the car. After getting a mid-season promotion, Albon got a taste of what life is like at the front of the grid alongside Max Verstappen.
Red Bull Racing confirmed his 2020 seat way in advance of the season start meaning Albon knew exactly what to expect. With the added experiance and the lack of stress, his boss believes the stability will make Albon a better driver.
“It’s probably the first time since his karting career that he’s had that. He’ll only benefit from that. He’s had a lot of adversity to deal with during his career. You see people’s make-up in adversity and I think he’s shown that determination, that character, and I’ve got no doubt he’ll benefit from stability now. And he shares many of the same virtues that Max has with that ability to cope with pressure, that determination," Horner told Autosport.
