Bernie Ecclestone wouldn't be surprised if Mercedes walked away
Mercedes have won everything there is to win in Formula 1, claiming the Drivers' and Constructors' Championship on multiple occasions and Bernie Ecclestone believes it wouldn't be a surprise for them to leave the sport.
Mercedes have enjoyed one of the most dominant spells in Formula 1 history, winning six World Championship doubles on the bounce, Lewis Hamilton being involved in all of them. He won his sixth title in 2019, with 2016 the only season the Brit has not won the Drivers' Championship in the last six seasons.
Former F1 boss Ecclestone has admitted he wouldn't be surprised to see Mercedes walk away from the sport, with nothing else left to prove.
"Toto wants to be prepared for the event that Mercedes says goodbye to Formula 1 and only continues as an engine manufacturer," says Ecclestone in conversation with F1-Insider.com.
"Why would Mercedes continue to spend so much money on a team if they have already won everything? As far as the image is concerned, it is certainly enough for the company to do marketing with hybrid engines."
