Lewis Hamilton is reportedly in an “advanced stage” of signing a new two-year contract extension with Mercedes according to Gazzetta dello Sport, keeping him at the Silver Arrows until the end of 2022.

Hamilton’s current contract finishes at the conclusion of the 2020 season. Towards the end of 2019, he had been heavily linked with a move to Ferrari for 2021.

But that doesn’t look like the case now after the Scuderia announced in December that Charles Leclerc would be there until the end of 2024.

Luigi Perna wrote in Friday’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport: “In the meantime, Lewis Hamilton is in discussion with Mercedes over the renewal of his contract,” wrote Perna.
“The negotiation, which will see Hamilton extend his stay until the end of 2022, is at an advanced stage and is worth in the region of 45m Euros a year with bonuses.”

Alongside Leclerc committing his future to Ferrari, Max Verstappen was announced to remain at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing until the end of 2023.

Should Hamilton sign a contract extension and stay at Mercedes it would be another name to add to the list of confirmed drivers for the 2021 season alongside Leclerc, Verstappen, Esteban Ocon at Renault and Sergio Perez at SportPesa Racing Point.
