Mercedes "not only fear Ferrari but Red Bull also"
Mercedes are expecting 2020 to be a very competitive season. The German team believes that both Ferrari and Red Bull Racing will genuine contenders for the world championship and it will be an exciting battle at the top of the grid. James Allison believes the car must be a lot faster in 2020 if they want to win again.
“We must not only fear Ferrari. Red Bull is also a very strong team," said the technical director in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport. "We are not entering any race with the confidence that we will win.
“It is clear to us that we need to make our car considerably faster between today and Melbourne 2020 if we want to have a chance against Red Bull and Ferrari. But that is not an easy task, it is the ultimate challenge."
Many believe that Ferrari had the fastest car for much of the season and this is something that Mercedes needs to improve if they are to win again.
"It is an important factor. You can put pressure on your opponent to make mistakes. If you are in his gearbox with a faster car, then he does not have many options and you can take the initiative. The advantage of a fast car in the race gives you many strategic benefits.
“We would be happiest if we have the fastest car in the race and can start from pole position. That must be our goal for next year."
With the 2019 season only just coming to an end, heads have already turned to 2020 and it won't be long before we are back racing in Australia.
