Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has joked he would “fly to Mars” with Lewis Hamilton after speculation surrounding the two following each other to Ferrari for 2021, leaving the Silver Arrows.
When Wolff missed out on the Brazilian Grand Prix it brought speculation that he could be replacing Chase Carey as the CEO of Formula 1 or join Hamilton in his potential switch to the Scuderia.
But Wolff has dismissed any comments and is focused on the 2020 season with Mercedes.
“Sounds like a good plan,” Wolff said in to Kronen Zeitung newspaper.
“But I’d rather put something else out there: fly to Mars with Lewis and see if there is anything to be won there.
“In all seriousness, I want to be successful with Mercedes in 2020, and what happens after that will be decided in the next few months.”
The Austrian enters the off-season having clinched the Silver Arrows sixth constructors title in a row since the hybrid era but admits it is difficult to relax and switch off from everything.
“My ‘performance doctor’ says you need years to work your way into such a stress level and then years to get out of it,” he added.
“Three weeks of vacation won’t help – you also have to have periods of recovery throughout the year,” explained the team boss.”
While Wolff expects that Hamilton can claim a record-equalling seventh World Championship in 2020 if they can provide him with a car equivalent to their rivals.
“If we give him a car that is at the level of the others – it doesn’t have to be better – then he will do it because of he has the qualities,” he explained.
