Ross Brawn tips his hat to Sergio Perez: "Thanks to Perez's consistency..."
Sergio Perez has gone under the radar during the 2019 Formula 1 season, but at times the Mexican has been sublime. Ross Brawn acknowledges his achievements and explains how he has been the driving force in Racing Point's push for fifth place in the F1 constructors' championship.
Perez, who has scored twice as many points as his teammate Lance Stroll, is in the 10 top of the drivers championship and breathing down Daniel Ricciardo's neck with just two races remaining. Racing Point sit one point ahead of the Toro Rosso and 18 points behind Renault.
Brawn, Formula 1's managing director, is impressed with the Mexican's talents as it seems to have had a positive effect on the midfield championship battles.
"Sergio Perez is another driver who seems to have turned things around in the second part of the season. From Spa onwards, the Mexican has only missed out on points in Singapore, where he retired with a reliability problem," Brawn said in his column.
"His results have not grabbed the headlines, his best being a sixth place in the Belgian Grand Prix, but when the top five or six places are pretty much pre-booked by the top three teams, finishing in the top 10 is a great result, especially given how tight it is in the mid-field. Thanks to Perez’s consistency, Racing Point are still in with a chance of taking fifth place in the constructors’ championship, which would be very significant, especially if it was done at the expense of a factory team, namely Renault."
