Alex Albon: "Maybe I wasn't such a bad choice for Red Bull!"
Alex Albon has had a great year. He's been promoted from Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing and is performing well for the top three team. It's been a crazy year as the British-Thai driver had initially planned to race in Formula E at the start of the season.
"It was an uncertain period," Albon said as he looked back on the past year. “A period with a lot of stress, since a choice had to be made as to which way I would go. Scary perhaps, but luckily taking risks has paid off.
“I think I already had discussions with Red Bull at the end of last year in Abu Dhabi. I was then still involved in the title fight with George Russell, but there were conversations with Red Bull. More in the direction of a simulator racer.
“It still feels like a grade. Of course, I feel more secure in the car, but I also know that there is room for improvement. It was also stressful since I wanted to focus on racing, but at the same time had to be shown to the media by Red Bull. A few stressful days.
“That's why I was happy to finish fifth (in Belgium), since it silenced certain people. At that time there were many people who thought that Daniil (Kvyat) might have been the best choice. My result showed: "Okay, maybe I wasn't such a bad choice!"
Albon has performed well for Red Bull and will hope that he has impressed enough to hold onto the seat for 2020.
