F1 return "getting harder" for Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso believes that an F1 return is slipping away, saying that it is not in his "immediate plans" and that with his age the possibility of a comeback is "getting harder and harder". Alonso retired at the end of last season, but rumours of a return have swirled around ever since he left.
The Spaniard has never shut down the rumours, always leaving his options open, but time may now be running out for the 38-year old, especially given the lack of availability of seats in the top teams.
The final five years of Alonso's F1 career were disappointing, with just two podium appearances in his final season at Ferrari and never scoring more than 54 points in his four season long second spell with McLaren.
Speaking to La Sexta at a go-kart endurance race (which he won), Alonso said: “Everyone asks when I will return, but it’s not in my immediate plans. In the medium term, maybe after some time I will think about it.”
In the Spanish version of GQ magazine, Alonso also said: “It’s not impossible, but it’s getting harder and harder with my age.
“Now I could go back and enjoy it, which was impossible in my last years in the championship.
“Nothing has changed. I said goodbye in Abu Dhabi in 2018. After all those years I had to take a deep breath and clear my head. The years before that were difficult.”
