Romain Grosjean: "Replicating one track somewhere else is not the best solution"
Romain Grosjean believes that recreating corners on modern tracks is not always the best option. Some believe that taking iconic corners from traditional circuits and putting them on modern circuits is a possible option but the Haas driver is against this.
"It's harder than we think, and replicating one track somewhere else is not the best solution, I believe," Grosjean said to GPToday.net.
"But we'll see. It's much harder than it looks to build a track, but some of the recent ones have been a bit not exciting, especially with the run-offs. It's not what we want."
The problem with designing new tracks is that they are used for more than just Formula 1. Moto GP requires bigger run-off areas than Formula 1 would like for safety reasons. A compromise is therefore needed.
"There's always a disagreement between what MotoGP wants and what we want. That makes it harder. Some of kerbs we don't want to change, but MotoGP would like the kerbs to be made a certain way," Grosjean said.
"It's always going to be tricky but I believe there is room for improvement. Even looking at the designs of the tracks, you think 'Ah, I don't think it's going to be good just because it looks, that way, that way and that way."
Some circuits are more successful than others in Formula 1 and it will be interesting to see the direction that circuit designers go for in the future.
