Pirelli will give 2020 tyres to F1 teams in practice ahead of United States GP
Formula 1 teams and drivers will be given the chance to experience the 2020 F1 tyres during the United States Grand Prix weekend. During Friday practice, each driver will receive two sets of the Pirelli 2020 compounds.
The drivers can use next year's tyres in either FP1 or FP2. The FIA will be using rule which has been rarely used. This rule states that an additional tyre can be used at certain events for "evaluation purposes following a recommendation to the FIA from the supplier."
The tyres used in Austin will be the 2020 specification, but changes may be made following the data collected from the practice sessions and the tests which will be carried out by Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull between the 7th-8th October.
"We will supply the best option to all the teams in Austin," Pirelli F1 boss Mario Isola is quoted by Motorsport.com. "Two sets per car. This an additional opportunity to test the 2020 product.
"We are obliged to supply two sets of the same compound. We will identify a compound which is similar to one of the three selected for Austin, to make a proper comparison. The Barcelona test is a proper development test. Austin is let's say, a validation."
