Carlos Sainz has defended his former teammate Nico Hulkenberg, saying that if only talent and speed were considered, the German could be on the grid for "as long as he wants".

Hulkenberg is currently without a drive for next season after Renault decided to replace him with Esteban Ocon and Haas snubbed him, opting to keep their current line-up.

One of the most experienced drivers on the grid, Hulkenberg has driven for all midfield teams during his F1 career, famously failing to ever pick up a podium finish in his 171 race starts to date.

Sainz came to the defence of his 2018 teammate, telling Motorsport.com: "I think everyone knows what Nico has to offer, I don't have to explain that. But as we know, Formula 1 doesn't work just because of what you can do on the track.

"There are many factors in it apart from someone's talent. If it was purely about talent and speed, then he would have to be on the F1 grid for as long as he wants.

What do you think? Should Hulkenberg fight for a seat in F1, or should he leave at the end of the year and pursue other opportunities? Vote below!
