SportPesa Racing Point’s Sergio Perez has said that regulation changes lead to an increase in gaps between teams ahead of the 2021 overhaul in an attempt for closer racing.

Liberty Media is currently co-operating with teams to finalise the regulations for the 2021 season which will see different looking cars with bigger 18-inch wheels and much more simplified aerodynamics.

The idea is for cars to be able to follow one another with easier and be able to overtake, compared to the past few seasons which have seen drivers struggle to follow the car in front due to the disrupted airflow.

Not only that but a budget cap will be introduced to prevent teams with more money from being able to maximise their investments into their cars, hoping to make it more of an even field.

Perez signed a three-year contract with SportPesa Racing Point until the end of 2022 but isn’t convinced the changes will help Formula 1.

“In 2014, the engine was changed and we saw the biggest gaps in history for Mercedes,” Perez said to Marca sports newspaper.

“Two years ago the cars and wheels were made wider and that re-opened another gap.

“Every time there is a change of regulation, the gaps increase because teams with bigger budgets can spend more on their new cars.

“The smaller teams take years to get a little bit closer, when the big teams run out of possibilities to improve.”
