Alex Albon given confidence boost: “You can't do much worse than Pierre"
Formula 1 test driver Robert Doornbos has given Alex Albon the confidence boost he needs before he starts racing for Red Bull after the summer break. The Dutch racer said that Albon "can't do much worse than Pierre" and believes that the Thai driver will excel at his new team.
“You can't do much worse than Pierre. He has a third of Max's points. Who knows, you're right to grab the jackpot, like Max's? I don't think he (Alex) is of the same caliber, but I think he can cause surprises," Doornbos said to Motorsport.com.
“Albon is a logical move. It's nice to see how Formula 1 world works. He stays with Red Bull, but finishes the season with another team," he said.
Doornbos believes that Gasly struggled to handle the pressure at Red Bull and performed better when there was less pressure at Toro Rosso.
"The pressure was therefore less. He was next to Brendon Hartley and he made a mess of it in his own way." Doornbos continues. “Then you come to Red Bull Racing, a top team; a world championship team. Then you have to adjust your mindset and then the pressure is indeed higher. If you have trouble with that, then you fall for it. "
"He is a race winner in all classes except Formula 1."
Albon will hope to impress at Red Bull and carry on his race-winning momentum from previous formulas.
