Summer break grades: How have Renault done so far?
Renault will be disappointed with their results so far this season but will hope that things improve after the summer break. After finishing 2018 as the 'best of the rest' they will not be pleased with their standing of 6th halfway through this season. The two drivers have tried to do what they can with their equipment but have struggled to make an impact.
Renault 5/10
Considering Renault were talking about being world title contenders in 2021, it seems that they might want to amend their goals. Cyril Abiteboul's leadership seems questionable and the fact that McLaren, who use the same Renault engine, are so much faster seems strange. Something needs to change if they are to get back to where they should be.
There have been reliability issues and the atmosphere at the team isn't one that feels successful. They need to intoduce radical change if they are to make their mark on the midfield this season.
Daniel Ricciardo 7/10
Everybody knew that Ricciardo's move to Renault wasn't going to be one that immediately paid off but few would have predicted the team to fall down to 6th. The Aussie must be gutted and he tries hard with the car that he has but it is clear that it is just not up to the job. Having only picked up 22 points this season Ricciardo will be hoping that things really improve next year else he can wave goodbye to his dream of becoming a World Champion.
Nico Hulkenberg 6/10
Hulkenberg hasn't driven as well as his teammate so far this season but he hasn't really made many mistakes either. The crash in Germany was unfortunate but again the German is doing what he can with the car that he has been given. He will be hoping that things improve as at the age of 31, it is unlikely that a top team will take him on at the end of his contract with Renault.
