Albon "more relaxed" as F1 experience grows
Toro Rosso youngster Alex Albon has revealed how he has become much more comfortable with the F1 car in recent weeks as he gets used to the premier category of single seat racing.
Albon may not have scored points for four rounds, but he has shown solid pace throughout, including an impressive P9 in qualifying at the British Grand Prix.
The Thai driver had barely driven an F1 car before pre-season testing in Barcelona, having almost given up on his F1 dream by signing a contract to race in Formula E, before Toro Rosso bought him out of the contract.
Albon is quoted by formulaspy.com as saying: “I’m quite comfortable with Formula 1 now. It’s becoming more and more normal, and I’m more relaxed.
"I was a bit edgy at the start, but there’s a lot more calmness about everything now. I’m in the rhythm now, and there’s less stress about qualifying well. The whole atmosphere feels a lot more relaxed as I’ve settled into it.”
Albon added that he is focussing on getting to grips with the incredible power and downforce of a Formula 1 car, even though it's not the driving style he prefers.
He added: "These cars have so much downforce. Stability isn’t really what I like in a car. I don’t mind a car moving around but that isn’t always the quickest way around.
"Understanding that and how much to get away with…I love quite a bit of front end grip. Getting that balance right is very important.”
