Hamilton believes Ferrari used another engine mode in Canada
Mercedes driver, Lewis Hamilton has admitted even when he had DRS at the Canadian Grand Prix he was unable to keep up with Sebastian Vettel on the straights of the circuit, stating that the Scuderia have an engine mode Mercedes don't.
Despite Sebastian Vettel being clearly the quicker of the two, Hamilton made the most of the penalty handed to the German to take the victory with Vettel unable to build enough of a gap to make his penalty void. It was Mercedes' seventh win of the season an impressive feat considering they were expected to be the slower of the two leading teams.
Hamilton reflected on the pace Ferrari showed at the Canadian Grand Prix and admitted he couldn't keep up with the raw pace on the straights.
"They were so fast on the straight," said Hamilton as quoted by Motorsport.
"They certainly used a different 'power mode' that we don't have.
"Ferrari suddenly boosted the power and Vettel shot away on the straight parts of the circuit, even while I had DRS open.
"In the race, I knew that their pace suddenly became much higher, but that's how the game goes."
