Hamilton hated missing out on FP2:" It's like sitting in the headmaster's office"
Lewis Hamilton managed just eight laps during Friday afternoon as contact with the wall ended his FP2 session early in Canada. The five-time world champion described the incident as an "innocent mistake" and is relying on data from Valtteri Bottas.
Bottas' fastest time couldn't beat either Ferrari as Charles Leclerc topped the session and Sebastian Vettel completed the one-two. Hamilton's early 1:12.938 was fast enough to place him in 6th.
When his Silver Arrow returned to the garage, the problem was clearly more than just a puncture. The Mercedes mechanics were forced to take off the back of the car.
"I made a mistake in FP2 and damaged the car. The boys tried really hard to fix it, but there wasn't enough time. I don't remember the last time I missed a whole session before. It's definitely not great to watch the session from the garage; it feels like sitting in the headmaster's office, wishing to be back in class," Hamilton said.
"It was an innocent mistake, I was doing multiple laps on the Medium tyre and was really trying to find the limit. Obviously, I went slightly over, I had a big snap out of Turn 9 and was drifting for a long time, hoping I wouldn't hit the wall."

His Mercedes teammate managed to put in 46 laps around the circuit and Hamilton is confident this will be enough data to draw upon for the Canadian Grand Prix.
"Luckily Valtteri had a good session today, so there'll be a lot of analysis from that. The boys will do a great job fixing the car tonight and we'll come back ready for a better day tomorrow," Hamilton concluded.
