Binotto believes Ferrari still have hope even if Canadian Grand Prix goes badly
Mattia Binotto claims the Canadian Grand Prix is not Ferrari's last hope for the 2019 Formula 1 world championship. After his win in Monaco, Lewis Hamilton opens up a 55 point gap, but that could have been worse had Sebastian Vettel failed to break the Silver Arrows one-two streak.
The Formula 1 circus heads to Canada for the next race, a track which is more engine focused. The Italian team should be able to make the most of their engine, but if they fail to do so, Mercedes might be able to virtually wrap up the championship. Binotto doesn't think so.
"The race in Canada is not the last [hope] this season. It is necessary to keep getting better with each Grand Prix. We have developed a programme that will solve problems that have arisen this year. The hard work is underway in Maranello," Binotto said after the Monaco GP.
Despite this claim, Binotto went on to confirm there will be no upgrades on the SF90 for the race in Canada. Instead of relying on upgrades, the Ferrari team principal hopes to make sure the team is better prepared.
"The cars will be the same as in Monaco, the only thing we can do is prepare as well as possible. As I said, this was not the last race of the season. I think we will be in better shape in Canada than in Barcelona, but for now Mercedes is the strongest and the best car," Binotto added.
