OFFICIAL: McLaren and Piastri agree on a long-term multi-year extension
McLaren and Oscar Piastri have agreed to extend their collaboration on a multi-year deal which stretches beyond their previous engagement which expired in 2026. Now the papaya team and the Australian look toward a long-term future in what has been a 'winning partnership.'
In a McLaren issued press release, the Woking-based team reveals the contract extension with their driver, Piastri: "McLaren Formula 1 Team today announced a multi-year extension of its winning partnership with Oscar Piastri. The Australian driver will continue in papaya for the long term."
The Australian joined McLaren in replacement of countryman, Daniel Ricciardo, ahead of the 2023 season. After surprising the team with several outstanding performances he was quickly offered a contract extension which would see him race for the team until the end of the 2026 season, a period which both parties have clearly agreed to be too short.
'Piastri of vital importance to McLaren's successes'
Why is McLaren extending Piastri's contract? The teams highlights his 'vital' contribution to their 2024 Constructors' championship. "In 2024, the 23-year-old Australian won the Hungarian and Azerbaijan Grands Prix, also achieving podiums in Monaco, Austria, Monza, Singapore and Qatar as well as a Sprint win in Qatar," results that saw him finish P4 in the standings "in just his second year in Formula 1. These results were a vital factor in the team’s FIA Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship win."
