Liam Lawson has a clear goal in mind in his first Formula 1 season at Red Bull Racing: to win the constructors' championship alongside Max Verstappen. Will the youngster enter the season with being tasked to help Verstappen on track as well in 2025? Lawson was yet to elaborate on that matter.
Will Lawson accept role as second driver alongside Verstappen?
Both Christian Horner and Helmut Marko seemed to allude to a role as the team's number two driver for Lawson. The Red Bull team boss stated that Verstappen clearly comes first at the team, while Marko said Lawson's task was to consistently bring in points for the constructors' championship. His expectation was that Lawson should be able to stay within two to three tenths of Verstappen.
Lawson agreed that his role involved helping the team to the constructors' title, but did not directly address whether he also had a supporting role to Verstappen. "The team's goal is to win the Constructors and obviously they weren't able to do that last year and that's the clear goal going into this year," the 23-year-old New Zealander said in conversation with GPblog and others.
"Obviously we're doing the best job we can to make the car as fast as possible. And for me if we're in a position that we're fighting for winning the Constructors then I'm doing my job. So I think that's really where the team's goal for me and their expectation for me is at, outside of obviously my goals in Formula 1," Lawson added.
