Max Verstappen is the most outspoken critic of the now very extensive Formula 1 calendar. After a gruelling season in 2024, 24 Grand Prix weekends await teams and drivers once again, with the reigning world champion regularly saying that it is far too many. Four-time world champion Alain Prost agrees with the Dutchman on this topic.
Ten seasons ago in 2015, just 19 Grand Prix were on the calendar, already a very time-consuming year. Now, fast forward to 2025, and there are 24 Grand Prix weekends that teams and drivers have to navigate. It may be a huge season, but in 2024, the constructors' championship did come down to the final race of the season at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with Lando Norris' fine win sealing McLaren's first team title since 1998.
But looking back on last season, Prost argues that the championship can be divided into several parts: "In the beginning, there was a dominance by Verstappen, then the comeback by McLaren, and the victories by Ferrari," said the former champion at RMC Motori.
"The final with the constructors' title was very interesting. Next year it is important to be very consistent, make few mistakes, and be maximally productive, but it will not be easy in a season with 24 Grands Prix to keep concentration and performance high."
Prost prefers more testing days
But, like Verstappen, Prost thinks the number of Grands Prix is too high: "For me, it is always too much, 17 or 18 races were already too many. Of course, someone could say that we did a lot of test days on track in addition to the races, but I have always had the same idea: I prefer the test days on track to too many races like now."
This is for a reason, continues Prost: "Especially for the young drivers who can learn and not have to do it in the simulator, for the sponsors who can have more time for them during the test days instead of doing all those races."
