Zak Brown has made his stance on the FIA stewards very clear. He has voiced the fact that they should be paid several times in the past few weeks, following the new rule changes. This time, Brown has also mentioned Max Verstappen and how he behaves in relation to the rules.
On the podcast James Allen on F1, McLaren's CEO Zak Brown spoke about the new FIA regulations surrounding motorsports. While talking about drivers swearing or not meeting the specific apex point, he also mentioned four-time world champion Max Verstappen.
Brown on Vertstappen's understanding of the rule book
“I think Max has done a great job of absolutely understanding what the rules say."
Instead of becoming stricter, Brown actually wants the FIA to go in a completely different direction. "I’d like us to take a step back, loosen it up, full-time stewards, those that have raced who can make a little bit more of a subjective decision of whether that was right or wrong." The FIA often has ex-F1 drivers act as stewards, which many team principals agree on.
He continued, “There’s still going to be times they get it wrong, but I think that’ll come with better racing because you also then get into things like at the apex, you take turn one in Austin, the apex is actually around the corner, and so then you start getting into that debate." At the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, McLaren driver Lando Norris and Red Bull Racing driver, Verstappen fought hard for their positions against each other. What was considered a controversial ruling at the time, Norris received a penalty for "gaining a last advantage off-track". Despite finishing before Verstappen, he ended up being classified as finishing behind.
Brown mentioned, “I think if we have too many rules, no one’s actually sure what the rules are. So we just need to go back to kind of what worked in the good old days.”
