Wolff responds to Hamilton's claims of his worst ever race in F1
It was one of the worst drivers in his F1 career. Those weren't the words of a pundit or a critic, but the words of Lewis Hamilton after the Canadian Grand Prix. In what has been a tough start to the season for the seven-time World Champion, he labelled his own races as one of the worst he has ever competed in. Along with Hamilton, George Russell also said his race was 'ugly' after he could only take P3 after starting on pole. Team principal Toto Wolff has responded to those remarks from his drivers.
Wolff believes Canada was a 'positive race' for Mercedes
Mercedes showed some promise throughout the weekend in Monreal, with Russell's pole position in qualifying highlighting that the German team may have found the pace required to challenge for podiums and/or wins after they could not adapt to the 2022 regulation change.
However, Russell could not take advantage of taking the pole, as a mistake-filled race meant he could only finish in P3. Hamilton finished in P4 after starting in seventh place, but mistakes also hampered his race, which he said was one of the worst performances in his career.
But Wolff took a much more positive view of the team's performance at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve compared to his two drivers, saying, "I think when you finish third and fourth, where we have been coming from, then it's a positive race. Three and four is much better than what we had in the last few races, so that's good.
"But I think those drivers saw that there was more," continued the Austrian. "We could have maybe gained a position or two, and that's why there is a kind of negative sentiment that prevails. But you would have given them third and fourth before the weekend, and they probably would have taken it."
