Perez's former team boss says this is who should replace him
Sergio Perez's contract situation at Red Bull Racing is still uncertain. While Red Bull is keen to wait and see the Mexican's performance, Otmar Szafnauer, who has worked extensively with Perez, put in a good wood for the Mexican. According to him, he should stay with the world champions.
Sergio Perez is in his fourth season at Red Bull. His contract expires at the end of the season and the six-time Grand Prix winner is not sure whether or not he will be extended. Otmar Szafnauer worked with Perez as his team principal at Racing Point. Their shared experience was very positive and he believes the 34-year-old is the best driver for Red Bull.
Perez should stay at Red Bull Racing
To several media outlets, including Mirror Sport, he expressed his praise for the Mexican. He was asked a while ago: If you were Christian Horner, who would you replace Checo with? He replied: Knowing Checo as well as I do, I would replace Checo with Checo'. If I were Christian, I would still keep him for next year. Let's not forget, in the first year [2021] Max won [the title] partly because of Checo and partly because of the circumstances.
Perez's former team boss is also realistic and understands that the Mexican's performance hasn't always been stellar. ''Yeah, he's had some lows, but this year from what I can see, apart from a couple of races where I think he should have finished a bit higher, I think he's doing it. Checo's strength has always been racecraft - he's never been a great qualifier.
"There weren't many times that I could count when he worked for me where I thought, 'Why would you do that?' during a race.''
The Mexican's future remains uncertain.
