Alonso's fans angry with Van der Garde: 'Better not go to Spain'
His podcast DRS; (The Race Show in Dutch), but for Giedo van der Garde, that does not mean that his statements do not reach other countries, including Spain. A week ago, the former F1 driver said something about Fernando Alonso; a statement that clearly went down the wrong way with fans of the two-time world champion.
Van der Garde was quite critical of Alonso's action at the Australian Grand Prix, which helped trigger a crash by close pursuer George Russell. The former driver and current TV commentator said, "This was a dirty trick by Alonso. You can see how much slower he was going than the corner before. Going on the brakes in the middle of the straight is really a no-go."
"I have a lot of respect for Alonso, but he really is an a**hole. So is Russell, but a little less so," Van der Garde concluded. And so that last statement hit Spain as well. Via his Instagram page, the Dutchman then received a lot of messages 'wishing him well'. "I got quite a lot of messages under a post, dm's too. They went completely wild. P*ta, P*ta Madre. I don't know what else," Van der Garde said in this week's broadcast.
Van der Garde unaware of any guilt
Thinking back, Van der Garde states that he said "nothing wrong at all" about Alonso. Except that he is an a**hole. To that, Van der Garde responded with: "Yes, but in good form... So that he is... Yes, okay. It's a good thing I wouldn't go to Spain now. Because if I ended up there... Maybe after this weekend we'll be a bit more positive about Alonso and then we'll put that online, with Spanish subtitles," the former driver laughed.
