While Oliver Bearman was making his unexpected debut for Ferrari in an official F1 session, Carlos Sainz was further away undergoing surgery for acute appendicitis at a hospital in Jeddah. The operation went well, his Italian team informed.

In a brief statement, Ferrari stated: "Carlos is out of surgery. Everything went well and he is now resting at the hospital. We send him our full support for a quick recovery".

Sainz was already not feeling well on Wednesday, after which he left the F1 paddock and went to rest in his hotel. A day later, he was still feeling lousy, but the Spaniard did take part in the two free practice sessions. On Friday, doctors in Saudi Arabia diagnosed Sainz with appendicitis. He immediately went under the knife.

Sainz's return date unknown

It is still unknown how long Sainz will be out of the running. In the 2022 season, Alex Albon missed the Italian Grand Prix because of appendicitis as well. The Thai was back in his Williams two weeks later. Afterwards, he told GPblog that the Singapore Grand Prix (his return race) was the toughest of his career.
