Lewis Hamilton got away scot-free with an alleged unsafe release in the pit lane during the Canadian Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso had to brake for the Mercedes driver and made an evasive steering move, but according to Toto Wolff, it was nothing more than a play by the Spaniard.

Hamilton and Alonso met during their first pit stop. Aston Martin's stop was quicker, and so Alonso looked set to overtake the Mercedes driver, but the German formation put a stop to that. It resulted in an incident that was investigated by the stewards, but was not found severe enough to penalise the Briton.

Wolff calls Alonso's behaviour 'dramatic'

In Mercedes' garage, Wolff could be seen mocking Alonso's reaction, which clearly provoked irritation from the Austrian team boss. "[It was] a bit of drama," he was quoted as saying by Express. "Shaking the steering a little bit and a little bit of touching of the brakes. He is good at that, the cries of 'I nearly hit him'... a bit of drama."

In the end, Hamilton did not have to fear for his place on the podium, which would have gone to Charles Leclerc in case of a time penalty. In the closing stages of the race, he approached Alonso, who had a problem with his Aston Martin. The Spaniard nevertheless managed to keep the Mercedes driver behind.
