Marko had to convince Horner and Newey not to go to Ferrari
Christian Horner and Adrian Newey could have made a step to Ferrari. Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko confirms to Swiss Blick that he had to convince Newey and Horner not to switch to Ferrari.
There is quite a tug-of-war in the paddock for Red Bull men. Many teams are hoping to find their way up and are therefore looking at taking over the Austrian racing stable's star team. So too is Ferrari. At the 2022 Canadian Grand Prix, the Italians cast a rod at British team boss Christian Horner. "I spent all night trying to convince Horner to stay with us. That cost us a lot of extra millions," Marko said.
Newey and Horner at Ferrari?
Adrian Newey has also been in demand for years. The aerodynamics genius has been building race-winning cars for decades and should make Ferrari a championship-winning team. But Italian millions were not enough to win over the British engineer either. "The then Ferrari boss, Luca di Montizemelo, was already cheering in the paddock. But we still managed to change his mind that night," says Marko.
