Lawson wins race in Super Formula and takes lead in standings
- Toby McLuskie
Red Bull junior Liam Lawson shot to the lead in the Super Formula standings. With his second win of the 2023 season at Autopolis, the New Zealand racing driver moves above Ritomo Miyata in the rankings. Lawson showed his skills in the Japanese auto racing class, but perhaps a Formula 1 seat is in store for the talent.
Lawson took maximum advantage of the absence of Mugen teammate Tomoki Nojiri. The New Zealander recovered from a poor start to win by 1.2 seconds in the fourth race of the season. This despite a late safety car putting him at a disadvantage against his direct competitors.
Lawson in the lead
A while ago, Lawson told GPblog in an interview that he can adapt well to new situations.
The 21-year-old driver from Oceania is now four points clear of Miyata in the rankings. The next race is scheduled for mid-June, when Super Formula will move to Shibata for the Sportsland SUGO circuit.
