Ferrari's 2022 season start was fantastic, but it could not continue that line towards the second half of the season. The Italian racing stable had hoped for at least as good a start to the season this year, but nothing could be further from the truth. Ferrari did not start as badly as it did in 2023 since 2009. According to team boss Frederic Vasseur, there is not much point in looking at the (better) competition.

What Ferrari needs to do is focus mainly on itself and not be distracted by the other top teams. This is what Vasseur tells Motorsport.com.

"To be focused on Red Bull or Mercedes or Aston Martin, I think it would be a mistake. We have to get the best from what we are doing, and to be focused on ourselves," said Vasseur, who says his racing team made a good step between the second (Saudi Arabia) and third (Australia) Grand Prix of the year.

Updates should help

"And if we're able to bring a couple of updates like this... I think the issue in Melbourne was not the potential of the car, it was more the job that we did as a team to extract the best from this, and that we have to be focused on this," stated the 54-year-old Frenchman. Charles Leclerc crashed out at the Albert Park Circuit, while teammate Carlos Sainz had to hand in his fourth place from the stewards after a five-second time penalty.

Ferrari collected 26 points in three GP weekends. Carlos Sainz accounted for 20 of these points, while Charles Leclerc did not go beyond scoring six. By comparison, World Cup leader Max Verstappen is already on 69 points.
