Dr Helmut Marko is happy with the result of the Australian Grand Prix and says his team made the most of it. He is also happy with how Max Verstappen dealt with Mercedes' attack in the opening stages of the race. The Red Bull Racing adviser also feels that Perez himself caused his problems in Australia.

Verstappen started the race from pole, but lost his leading position to George Russell after the very first corner after The Dutchman did not get away well from his starting spot. Two corners later, Hamilton also managed to overtake the two-time world champion. It was noticeable that the Dutchman was extremely cautious in both battles with the Mercedes drivers.

Marko happy with Verstappen

However, Marko was happy with Verstappen's cautious opening phase. The Dutchman was perhaps a little too cautious, but at least his car stayed in one piece. This later allowed him to take first from Hamilton, and then control the race.

"Max also did what he had to do in those battles at the beginning. Mercedes had nothing to lose, so they went for it. After overtaking Hamilton, Max controlled the race. And you know when he and Lewis get close, there is always fire. Max was right in not taking all the risks because he is going for the championship," Marko said at de Telegraaf.

Marko on Perez weekend

The Red Bull adviser believes Sergio Perez himself caused his poor race. The Mexican had a tough Saturday with several moments in the third free practice. In qualifying, it appeared that the Mexican had not yet solved his problems: in Q1, he had already out-braked himself and got stuck in the gravel. According to Perez, this was due to problems with the car, but Marko informs otherwise. "Sergio Perez caused his own problem here," said the Austrian.
