McLaren driver Lando Norris piloted his orange car to a well-deserved sixth place in Melbourne today. The driver showed strong signs of pace throughout the race, which allowed him to not get caught up in the chaotic ending.

Positive signs for McLaren

Norris was speaking to Sky Sports post-Grand Prix at the Albert Park circuit and had this to say on the positive race pace of the McLaren "For the majority of the race the pace was strong, and I had good starts and stayed away from damage. Half the job seems to be avoiding people who are a bit out of control making mistakes and crashing into people. Not the easiest." before continuing "Got passed Yuki (Tsunoda) and Nico (Hülkenberg) reasonably well. So, first positive race in terms of everything coming together. Happy for that!"

DRS an issue

Norris is adamant the main issue behind McLaren's lack of pace at times is the weak DRS system attached to the car "We are so poor in DRS... when we open DRS we don't go any quicker. And the majority gain more speed than us."

The Brit also feels the lack of speed on the out-lap contributed to the crash at the second restart "It's such a slow lap at the restart you can't get the tyres in. It was obvious with the tyres cold into turn 1, you are going to lock fronts and when you are racing you want to brake later than others then you make mistakes."
