He did, He did not, He did. It was a night of alternating emotions for Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard finished the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix third on track, but after the podium ceremony he had to hand over his trophy to George Russell. This was because the Aston Martin driver allegedly failed to execute a time penalty properly. A day later, it was a happy ending after all: Alonso got his podium back.

It turned out to be a unique podium, as it was the 100th time in his long career he was allowed to pick up a trophy in Formula 1. A big achievement? Definitely! Should there have been more podium finishes? Yes!

Hamilton the frontrunner

Alonso started 360 weekends of Formula 1. In those, he thus reached 100 podium finishes, a percentage of 27.93 per cent. Lewis Hamilton, probably the best driver to ever compete in Formula 1, stood on an F1 podium no less than 191 times. That represents a 61.2 per cent success rate. Incidentally, there is only one driver who has a 100 per cent percentage. The American George Amick finished on the podium in all Grands Prix he entered: in 1958, he finished second at the Indy 500, which was then still part of the Formula 1 calendar. A year later, he was killed in Daytona during an IndyCar race.

It is likely that Max Verstappen will also join the list in the not too distant future. The Dutch world champion already has 79 podium finishes. That's a success rate of almost 50 per cent.
