On the last day of the Formula 1 winter test in Bahrain, Sky Sports suddenly hurled a rumour into the world: Aston Martin would consider fielding Sebastian Vettel as Lance Stroll's replacement should the Canadian be unable to take part in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Aston Martin responds to the rumour.

Wild rumours about Vettel

Little is currently known about the condition of Stroll, who could not be in action during the winter test in Bahrain due to a cycling accident. As a result, all sorts of speculation is circulating about his possible replacement for the opening race, should the need arise.

David Croft had heard a rumour that Aston Martin would consider using not Felipe Drugovich or Stoffel Vandoorne, but the retired Vettel as a replacement. Indeed, Vettel would be in favour of it. However, the rumour did not originate from the Aston Martin garage and was not confirmed there. Moreover, Vettel's brother Fabian is said to have stated that Sebastian is currently on a camping holiday with his family.

Naturally, Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack was soon confronted with the question of whether Vettel will become Fernando Alonso's new (temporary) teammate. Krack acknowledges that a possible replacement is being considered, but sees Vettel as an unlikely scenario.

"He had a very, very thorough plan in mind for his retirement and I think this is also something that you have to respect. Let’s see what’s happening," he is quoted by Motorsportweek.com. However, he does not completely rule it out either, as when asked if Vettel would be open to a possible one-off appearance, Krack replied, "I will not tell you."
